Scenic Design – Double Bill: The Hearing Test & Swedish Movie

Full Production Description:

A surreal and high-contrast pairing of one-acts: one darkly satirical (Swedish Movie) and one rooted in disability-centered realism (The Hearing Test). The scenic design unified these tones with abstract structures, clinical furniture, and distorted visual language—playing on themes of miscommunication, language barriers, and perceptual distortion.

    • Created medical set dressing for The Hearing Test including diagnostic props and sterile modular surfaces

    • Built surreal bedroom set for Swedish Movie with oversized furniture and shifting perspective

    • Carved and painted broken panel flats and translucent wall sections

    • Coordinated lighting zones to heighten discomfort and intimacy

    • Painted floor textures with directional lines and visual misdirection cues

    • Merged accessibility-centered design with heightened absurdity for tonal contrast

    • Applied communication theory themes to visual layout and color palette

    • Prioritized spatial division and entrance framing to separate stylistic worlds

    • Poster design’s graphic, exaggerated contrast inspired scenic geometry

    • Supported the emotional stakes of actors navigating fragmented or silent dialogue through embedded environmental cues
